Registration & upload of application files

Step 1: Registration
  • In addition to personal details and contact details it is required to upload a copy of your passport and a portrait photo.

  • All personal data of unsuccessful applicants will be deleted two months after the admission exams at the latest.

The successful registration will be confirmed by email in which you will also receive your password for step 2.

Step 2: Upload of application files (portfolio)
  • Upload one PDF-file of max. 50 MB. If required, further files (e.g. videos) can be linked within this document (e.g. vimeo allows a password protected video upload).

  • Portfolios can still be updated until the deadline– afterwards adjustments are no longer possible.

  • If your file exceeds 50 MB, we request you use a compression tool.

The successful upload will also be confirmed by email - only then the submission is completed.
Important:
  • Please do not use any special characters or characters such as ä, ö, ü, ß, when naming your upload.

  • If you wish to apply to more than one department it is required to upload different portfolios and also use different email addresses.

  • Please regularly check your spam folder – especially if you are applying from abroad!

  • Technical support: entry-support@uni-ak.ac.at.

The positive assessment of the uploaded application files (portfolio) by the exam commission is the prerequisite for attending the second part of the examination. The invitation as well as information about part 2 will be distributed by email directly by the responsible department.

Examination week (by invitation only)

Depending on the department the second part of the entrance exam will take place either in Vienna or by video call. Detailed information on this will be given by the respective department.

International applicants

Visa for the second part of the entrance exam

If after the review of the portfolio you require a visa to enter Austria for the second round of the entrance exam - given the exam takes place in Vienna - the Office of Student Affairs can issue an invitation letter upon request to be presented to the Austrian representative authority (embassy, consulate) in your country.

For this we request international applicants to promptly send the following information / documents by email to studien@uni-ak.ac.at:

  • full name, address, date of birth

  • a scan of your passport

  • the invitation from the department to the second part of the entrance exams or proof that the first part has been completed and the second will take place in Vienna.

We highly recommend to book an appointment with the embassy for the beginning of February well in advance (cancelling an appointment is easier than making one on short notice).

Residence permit for students

After successfully passing the entrance exam the Office of Student Affairs issues a decision about conditional approval which is needed to apply for a student residence permit.

Applications for a student residence permit should ideally be submitted immediately after successfully passing the entrance exam. Processing time can take up to four months!

The websites of ÖAD and Bundesministerium für Inneres (in German language) (Ministry of Internal Affairs) are available to applicants for more information.
Translation and certification of documents for admission (not application)
  • All documents necessary for admission (see Study Programmes/Requirements) have to be submitted or uploaded as originals or as certified copies and have to be provided in PDF format.
  • Instead of a passport another form of ID can be used in combination with a certificate of citizenship.

Depending on the country of issue a certification of documents might be necessary, see list of certification in higher education. Please note that this might take some time!
Erasmus students are exempt from this.

Foreign-language certificates need to be accompanied by a certified translation in German or English.

Studying without secondary school leaving certificate

Basic information

For admission to the study programmes Cross-Disciplinary Strategies, Industrial Design Investigations and Art Education you need a school leaving certificate, a "Berufsreifezeugnis", or an international equivalent additionally to the successfully passed entrance exam.

If you do not have any of those you can take an exam called "Studienberechtigungsprüfung". This certificate is then valid for all study programmes within the same discipline among all Austrian universities - likewise the "Studienberechtigungszeugnis" from other Austrian universities is valid for the respective study programmes at the Angewandte:

  • Cross-Disciplinary Strategies: "humanities and cultural sciences", "artistic studies", and "natural sciences"

  • Industrial Design Investigations: "artistic studies", and "engineering studies"

  • Art Education: "artistic studies" and education

The Office for Student and Academic Affairs is available for advice and application submissions; guidance with content, determining topics and elective exams as well as preliminary decisions about admission are the responsibility of appointed consultants.

To avoid unnecessary effort, we recommend only considering the "Studienberechtigungsprüfung" after successfully passing the entrance exam (which is valid for three semesters).

Prerequisites

  • EU-/EEA-citizenship

  • 20 years of age

  • proven successful professional or extra curricular trainings relevant for the desired study programme well beyond completing compulsory education

Exams

  • written work about a predetermined topic
  • Exams in compulsory subjects

    • Cross-Disciplinary Strategies: "Maths" and "Psychology and Philosophy"

    • Industrial Design Investigations: "Descriptive Geometry" and "Maths"

    • Art Education: "English" and "History"

  • two elective exams (in agreement with the consultant of the "Studienberechtigungsprüfung")

The exams offer proof of aptitude to study, the level of the written work and the compulsory exams follows the syllabus of the 12th and 13th school year. Recognition of up to four exams of equivalent content and scope is possible at the proposal of the responsible consultant; a certificate ("Studienberechtigungszeugnis") can also be acquired by proofing the completion of the first part of a degree programme (minimum 30 ECTS).
