Institute of Conservation and Restoration

Head: o. Univ.-Prof. Mag. art. Dr. phil. Gabriela Krist
The Institute of Conservation and Restoration has a reputation as a respected competence centre for questions of conservation and restoration with regard to artistic and cultural treasures.  The four areas of specialist study at the “Angewandte,” with focal points that are co-ordinated with teaching at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts (Institute of Conservation-Restoration), are divided into the conservation and restoration of paintings, artefacts, textiles and stone. In addition, possibilities exist for specialisation in the areas of archaeology and find conservation, as well as modern and contemporary art, taking into account the current problematic of new media.

Art-technology examinations, involvement with state-of-the-art working and research methods, preventive and long-term preservation strategies, the support of collections and exhibitions, a reflective approach to conservation materials, the integration of ethical criteria, and training in transdisciplinary thought processes, are all important topics relating to the conservation sciences centrally anchored within the Institute.

The degree course in conservation-restoration takes place on a project-related and practical basis and increasingly includes teamwork in national and international research projects. The Institute’s in-house, chemical laboratory, which co-operates closely with the related Archaeomtetry and Technical Chemistry Departments, provides students with natural science support during their practical work.  Another integrative element of the study programme is internal teamwork with collections, the Institute of Artistic Sciences, Art Education and Communication and the workshops of the Institute of Art and Technology.

The integration of graduates takes place in projects and through the range of postgraduate teaching. In addition to knowledge updating, this results in the further expansion of the closely-knit graduate network.
