Rizal: The Hero as Traveller

Lecture by Prof. Ambeth Ocampo on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the Island Tides Initiative

Island Tides Inititative - Department for Artistic Strategies

The Island Tides Initiative is pleased to collaborate on a lecture by Prof. Ambeth Ocampo, initiated by the Embassy of the Philippines in Austria, focusing on the travels of José Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. Titled “Rizal: The Hero as Traveller”, Prof. Ocampo will explore how Rizal’s journeys, particularly to Austria, shaped his philosophical and political ideas, which played a significant role in the emergence of the Philippine nation.
While the words travel and tourism are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between the two: a tourist travels for leisure, while a traveller seeks an experience as a means of understanding himself in the context of the foreign. Rizal was deeply shaped by his travels, and reflecting on them helps us understand his life and the ideas that influenced the Philippines’ path to nationhood.

Following the lecture, the Island Tides Initiative invites you to a reception with H.E. Ambassador Evangelina Lourdes A. Bernas of the Embassy of the Philippines in Austria to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the initiative.

This event is organized in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Embassy of the Philippines in Austria, with the support of the Office of Senator Loren Legarda.
