Social Design students and lecturers are rethinking urban design at the intersection of art, climate and society

05. May 2026

At the intersection of art, climate and society, students and lecturers from the Social Design Studio are working to activate the outdoor space around the Burgtheater. The city itself is the main protagonist in this project. Through the redesign, it aims to demonstrate how it is changing in the face of the climate crisis and, at the same time, how it could defend itself against this threatening situation. Thus, Josef-Meinrad-Platz is being furnished with chairs and armchairs, whilst fried eggs are being cooked in the car park next to the theatre.

These and other interventions are part of a joint project between the Social Design Studio and the Burgtheater to remodel its outdoor space and create a stronger connection to the urban environment. The project will be presented for the first time under the name Stadt führt sich auf! as part of the Klimabiennale. Students and lecturers from the department are exploring how this is being developed and implemented.
