We
are pleased to announce the screening of an exceptional 98-minute documentary film about the life and work of György Kepes
(1906–2001), a Hungarian-American painter, photographer, designer, theorist, educator, and impresario.
Recognized today as a largely overlooked precursor of media art, Kepes is widely credited with popularizing
the concept of "visual culture" at mid-century. His name became synonymous with the intersection of art, science, and technology,
largely due to his visionary program developed in the 1960s at MIT, where he founded the Center for Advanced Visual Studies
(CAVS).
Kepes’ works bridge the gap between the technical and social realms through the guiding principles of “interthinking”
and “interseeing,” fostering a deeper connection between the two separate spheres. With this approach, Kepes pushed the boundaries
of human perception while striving to forge a shared, participatory artistic language that reimagined civic spaces as cybernetically
controllable systems. The film presents him not only as a seminal artist, educator, and thinker but also as someone whose
belief in “optical democracy” spurred him to pose the pivotal question: “Can technology be used to protect us from technology
itself?”
The film's director, Márton Orosz, will introduce and discuss his film in person. He is an art historian,
curator, graphic designer, photographer and internationally recognized Kepes scholar. He currently serves as the Curator
of the Collection of Photography and Media Arts at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest and as the Acting Director of the Vasarely
Museum in Budapest.
Please share this announcement with colleagues, friends, and anyone interested in the subject.
No prior registration is necessary. This event in English language is part of the Art X Science School for Transformation
public lecture series ‘Aesthetics of Transformation’ and is organised in cooperation with Art & Science, Transmediale
Kunst, and the Austrian Frederick and Lillian Kiesler Private Foundation.
