Cooking the Books

Organized by the Department of Painting, in the context of Chantal Kaufmann's seminar Why Galleries.

The Berlin based gallery owner Hannes Schmidt will share insights from his diverse experiences—from working as an artist and co-founding the nomadic project space Dingum to his current role as the gallery owner of Schiefe Zähne. He will reflect on the intersections, challenges and opportunities of art-making, experimental curating, and gallery business.
Hannes Schmidt is based in Berlin, where he initially worked as an artist. In 2011, together with Dennis Schroer, he founded the nomadic exhibition project Dingum (2011–2016). Schmidt is the founder of Schiefe Zähne gallery. Initially launched in early 2017 as a non-commercial project space, it has operated as a commercial gallery since 2018. Since its founding, the gallery has maintained a program of carefully curated exhibitions and collaborative projects, with a strong focus on discourse and socially critical approaches.
