Design Investigations at the
University of Applied Arts Vienna, led by Prof. Anab Jain, is a five-year design diploma that transcends traditional industrial
design boundaries. We prepare tomorrow's designers by expanding their toolkit to shape technological, social, and ecological
futures. From data to biology, politics to AI—our students engage with an ever-evolving design landscape, embracing limitless
possibilities.
The Topic, Summer Semester 2026
In Summer 2026, Design Investigations turns its attention to one of the most loaded objects
in design history: the chair.
We invite our students to design a chair
- it can be functional, dysfunctional, absurd, poetic, political, or deeply personal — as long as it reveals a position, asks
a question.
We’re seeking a guest tutor who is an experienced craftsperson
and maker, as well as a conceptual thinker, who can help students bring bold ideas into material life.
Job Description
We are seeking
a creative practitioner to join our teaching team in guiding students through this hands-on project.
The ideal candidate should have:
extensive experience in making
with a large array of materials
a strong background of collaborating with designers and other creatives to realize
prototypes and 1:1 scale models
worked in teams to realize projects
skills in mentoring and inspiring students
to experiment and build
Responsibilities:
helping
the teaching team in finalising the semester brief
Organize and hold a kick-off workshop introducing experimental
material making
Conducting tutorials, providing critical and useful feedback, and collaborating with the teaching
team in supervising the students to develop their concepts into final outcomes
Be a hands-on partner in producing,
maintaining, and documenting the final outcomes
Physical presence in the studio in Vienna
Working with the
teaching team to prepare content for the online presence of the department (e.g. articles for websites, social media, exhibitions,
etc.)
Suitable candidates will be informed of exact times and dates for interviews via email. Official employment will start on the 1 March 2026 and end on 31 August 2026.

The language
of instruction is English, but German skills would be an advantage.

The
minimum monthly salary for this position is currently € 1857,40 gross (14x per year for 20 hours per week)
and may be increased accordingly based on previous experience specific to the position in accordance with the collective agreement
for universities (B1, salary scale for academic/artistic university staff).
