The Science Visualization Lab is delighted to have received the Award of Excellence from the BioImages Association, which Michael Bachhofer, a PhD student at the Lab, received for his photo "Me".

"Because I had taken so many very detailed pictures of butterflies, I wanted to see the butterfly on me, so I made the Butterfly Eye Cam out of 35,000 straws. The result was the picture "Me", but also a camera that I exhibited several times as an interactive analog installation," says Bachhofer about his work.

Congratulations from the Angewandte!
The photo shows a low-resolution image taken with a specially developed camera without a lens, which can be used both as a camera and as an interactive installation. The photo was printed on Kodak Duratrans for a backlit presentation. The magnification is 1:1 due to the size of the camera and the image shows the artist himself from the butterfly's perspective. For this, he assembled the Butterfly Eye Cam from 35,000 straws. The result was the picture "Me" and at the same time a camera that was exhibited several times as an analog interactive installation.
