Bezirksmuseum

The University of Applied Arts Vienna (Expanded Museum Studies), the TU Wien (Spatial Design and Planning), and the Wien Museum cordially invite you to the presentation of the results of the project-based seminar “District Museum” in the winter semester 2025/26.

As part of the interdisciplinary course, students developed proposals for adaptations and redesigns for selected Viennese district museums. Through drawings, models, and texts, they engage with the specific collections, spatial conditions, and social questions surrounding these museums.

Since the 1920s, Vienna’s district museums have been dedicated to researching and communicating local history. Their collections—many of which originated from private donations—offer diverse perspectives on urban life and collective memory. The museums are situated in highly varied spatial contexts: in administrative buildings, residential complexes, or a former fire station. At the same time, they exemplify current questions concerning accessibility, visibility, representation, and participation within the cultural field.

The exhibited models explore how local history can be communicated today, which audiences district museums can reach, and how their presence in everyday life and urban culture might be strengthened. To this end, the students propose new spatial, curatorial, and communicative approaches, highlighting the potential of district museums as sites of local memory culture.
