Yrine Matchinda: Rematriation of Sacred Objects

An Art–Research–Gender lecture series event.
Cameroonian Sacred Objects and the Ethics of Colonial Repair
What happens when sacred objects taken during colonial rule return home? This lecture explores rematriation as a process of relational, spiritual, and cultural repair. Drawing on research into Cameroonian sacred objects held in German museums, it asks how their return can restore relationships between communities, ancestors, memory, and cultural heritage.

Yrine Matchinda is a researcher specialising in provenance research, colonial history, and cultural studies, with a particular focus on colonial collections, sacred objects, cultural restitution, and community voices. She is affiliated with the University of Dschang and TU Berlin through the DFG project Reverse Collection Histories, which investigates Cameroonian objects held in German museum collections.
