Let´s expand photography! Let's expand photographic
practice!
An intriguing book, somewhere between art and theory, inviting us to question the prevalent patriarchal
understanding of the photographic term. A book to be recommended to all design students. Theoretical background as well as
practical exercises and instructions. Space for personal experimentation.
A necessary book, a new approach: rereading
the history of photography, so far mostly formulated by men. Boiling down a complex topic with the help of many good design
decisions.
The result of four women – three artists and one curator – joining forces in 2019 to bring together
their shared interest in photography as an artistic motif in exhibitions, symposiums, and publications. They want to reflect
on their craft, their qualifications, the technical and theoretical knowledge.
Photography is always an act of
reproducing. Reproducing a technique, an object, a vision, an idea. A book that encourages you to look at previous techniques
and develop your own. In both its editorial and visual approach, the book invites and guides- also beginners- through the
practice of taking photographs.
Form and content are partnered equally. The inner pages generous design unfolds
on heavy coated and rough yellowish paper stocks.
Encased by a matt hard cover with a glossy dust jacket. Contrast between
material and visualization.
Of course, the details have also been considered. Apparently small typographical decisions
also shape the equal language. Here the “tréma” (Ï) is used as a new sign for fluid genders in the German language without
creating a gap within the “gendered” word, that allows the feminine, the male and further genders to be close despite differentiation.
